The following is a basic list of survival equipment to pack in your Rapid-Ditch. You must also have a life raft, PFDs, and a complete set of appropriate survival equipment for each. The survival equipment you carry will vary depending on where you boat, type of boating, the time of year, the size of your vessel, and number of passengers likely to be onboard.
All equipment should be appropriately packed and waterproofed. Confirm that the bag remains buoyant once you have packed it The content should be unpacked, checked, and serviced at the start of each boating season, then every 90 days thereafter.
Lubricate zippers to keep them operating smoothly. Your EPIRB and life raft are your two most important pieces of survival equipment. Treat them responsibly.
Essential Survival Equipment:
- EPIRB
- Handheld GPS back up for emergency use, with fresh batteries
- Handheld VHF transceiver, waterproof with fresh batteries
- First aid kit and manual
- Prescription medicines/vitamins
- Fresh water in water-tight receptacles
- Immersion suit or thermal protective aid for cool climates and waters
- Plastic drinking vessel graduated in 10, 20, 50ML, ½ Litre/person minimum
- Sunscreen and lip balm SPF 30+, water resistant
- Strobe SOS Light w/ fresh batteries, qty. 2
- Waterproof battery container, with spare fresh batteries
- Anti-seasickness tablets, six per person
- Signal horn
- Rescue 120DB Whistle – one for each crew
- Signal mirror with sight
- Sea anchor and line as back up for primary attached to raft
Highly Recommended Survival Equipment:
- Toilet paper in waterproof packets
